Best Bait For Catfishing
As of today, there are 37 different types of freshwater and saltwater catfish. Most of them, if not all, share the same similarities in bait preference and angling techniques. In general, catfish are most active during the night while they hunt for food; hence, the best time to catch the cats is after dark.
Shad
Adult and bigger catfish prey on live fish like the shad, and so the best bait to lure them is the shad. If you want to prepare your own bait, as most anglers do, cut the shad’s tail and slice in into strips. Attach the strips to a Carolina rig. Check if the barrel is heavy so that the rig will remain underwater.
Shad – Live Bait
Chicken Liver
Catfish are particularly attracted to stinky and smelly baits, and with that, the chicken liver having a strong scent will make an attractive bait. Chicken livers are also widely available and affordable. Unfortunately, bigger cats aren’t really attracted to chicken livers, and hooking them on your own is a bit difficult. Still, if you want to use liver, the best method is to leave them underwater for several minutes. Remove them if they turn hard or no longer oily. Use a treble hook for maximum lure.
Dip or Stink Bait
Most anglers have their own “secret” stink bait recipe, either inherited or by trial and error method. Of course, you can always head on to your favorite shop and buy commercially prepared mixes. Whatever your choice may be, just make sure that the dip is strong enough to hold against the current.
You can’t use a dip that’s too hard either. It needs to be broken down into pieces gradually to lure the cats in the surrounding area. Hooks and dips don’t work together, use the dipstick instead. If you want to work with hooks, catfish worms are a perfect fit.
Night Crawlers
You can also try using night crawlers. They are easy to get and almost free. If done correctly, this will lure the catfish from their hiding places and into your line. The smell of the worms will entice the cats to check the source. Unlike the other lures, there’s nothing fancy in using worms. Catfish don’t care how the worms are hooked because they just love the smell and taste of it.
If you are new to catfishing, the best way is to try the different varieties of catfishing bait and see to it which ones provide the most benefits.
